New Delhi: After 3 years in relief camp, Manipur teenager dies by suicide

A 17-year-old Class 12 student, who had been living in a relief camp since the onset of the Manipur crisis in May 2023, was found dead on Tuesday. Officials said the girl appeared to have taken her own life at the Leimaram high school relief camp in Bishnupur district.

The girl was a resident of Leimaram Waroiching but had been displaced to the school-turned-shelter nearly three years ago. At the time of her death, she was appearing for her higher secondary examinations, which began on February 17.

No suicide note has been found. But the girl recently told her family that she longed to go home.

“A few days back, the girl told her family members to get back to their home, and that she does not want to stay at the relief camp,” an official said.

The Nambol police station has registered a case of Unnatural Death. Her body has been handed over to her family following an autopsy at the Regional Institute of Medical Science (RIMS) in Imphal.

In December last year, the government started the resettlement of 257 internally displaced persons who were residing in the Leimaram high school relief camp.

Manipur has been roiled by sweeping ethnic violence since May 2023 in a widespread conflict that has claimed at least 260 people and displaced another 50,000 people. The clashes, which first began between the Meitei and Kuki communities, has since singed almost every community in the state, prompting the dismissal of the state government in February this year.
